What is the International Day of Families?

Origin of the International Day of Families

In 1983, to highlight the importance of families in the lives of people around the globe, the United Nations Economic and Social Council, based on the recommendation of the Commission for Social Development during its 28th session, adopted Resolution 1984/23 on the role of the family in development. This resolution emphasized the need to “encourage policymakers and the public to understand better family issues and the means to address them effectively.”

In 1993, following numerous discussions, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution A/RES/47/237, recognizing the universal significance of the family and officially proclaiming May 15 each year as the International Day of Families.
